A fast-paced, romance/ murder mystery with a grumpy-sunshine core? Sounds delightful. Let’s find out.
Read if you like: spicy romance, dual POV, murder mystery, unlikely duo, grumpy/sunshine, age-gap romance, second chances, instant connection, alpha males, leading ladies who are more than they seem.
Taylor just wanted a well-deserved vacation after teaching 2nd graders in a pandemic, in beautiful Cape Cod, with her brother. What she got was a clawfoot tub, a murder victim in her rental house, and a lot of details that don’t quite add up. She’s intrigued, and as a true crime junkie can’t let these details go.
Myles is a bounty hunter who left his detective career behind after one particularly tough case. He’s decided that being on the road is easier. There’s no one to disappoint. He’s working a murder case as a favor to a friend and will be back to his loner lifestyle in no time. What he didn’t plan on is Taylor. She everything he shouldn’t want and she’s insisting on getting involved in this case. Can he catch the killer before catching feelings?
I loved this book. I expected a quick, easy, spicy read and it did not disappoint. I’m a sucker for dual POV and Myles is a ball of cookie dough wrapped in barbed wire. He does so much mental gymnastics to try and stay away from Taylor that it’s easy to see how much he’s hiding under his prickly exterior. I can see where he comes off as arrogant, but its just the layer of hurt talking. Luckily, Taylor, the effervescent 2nd grade teacher is used to seeing beyond what people show the world and can tell that she wants Myles on her side – at least for the investigation. Just the investigation, right? Except none of her ‘safe options’ have ever worked out for her dating life. Maybe this rough-around-the-edges man is exactly what she’s been dreaming of to check all her boxes.
The murder case is a fun way to draw two unlikely people together. They both get to challenge each other and see hidden strengths. It’s fast paced but I still think that we get enough character development even in such a brief encounter. These are adults who have tried, and failed at relationships. They both know what they want, they just have to admit it to themselves.
Overall, I adored My Killer Vacation. It’s the perfect book when you don’t have a lot of time but want a lot of action. I laughed out loud so many times. I was trying to figure out who could be suspects. And most importantly I was rooting for a happy ending for our couple. Oh, and you get an epilogue. Swoon.
