Avery just became a teenage billionaire and her life is now even more crazy than that sounds because the old man who left her his fortune had plenty of family. Family who looks shocked… and mad. It’ll be just fine, right? Let’s find out!
Read if you like: YA, mysteries, ‘Cinderella’ stories, puzzles, thrillers, slow burn, love triangle, lots of fun characters, billionaire hijinks, mysterious rich boys, and a girl who’s streetwise and heart-strong.
Avery went from sleeping in her car and hoping she can get enough scholarship money to afford college to stupidly, unbelievably, life-alteringly rich. All because of Tobias T. Hawthorne. A complete stranger changed her life in a moment. And now she has to deal with a literal fortune and his begrudged family who ended up with next to nothing. As if that isn’t enough, the ‘old man’ was famous for his love of puzzles and games and it’s obvious that her presence was carefully planned. Now she has to figure out if she’s a player or a puzzle-piece all while dealing with the hot and mysterious Hawthorne boys and people who want the money no matter the price.
I wasn’t sure what to expect with this one but I was eager to start and I’m so glad I did. This book was so fun! It has a little bit of YA everything: a sad girl with potential and a troubled past, slightly-damaged yet hot boys, mysterious adults with unknown motivations, a gigantic mansion with a bowling alley, puzzles and games, action and danger, mystery, secrets, rumors, slow burn romance à la love triangle, and a whole lot of questions and things that don’t quite add up. Luckily, there are also clues.
And with all of that you get a fun and fast-paced adventure that I didn’t want to stop reading. I’m sort of in awe of how there were so many people, details, and plotlines yet remaining completely devourable. I was expecting it to take me at least a few days to get through but I would have finished it in 1 if I weren’t so busy.
I love all the characters. The boys are slightly unbelievable. But wouldn’t you be if you were ultra-rich and raised by a semi-mad genius? The caper/mystery was just twisty enough and oh-so teen friendly. Best part, and the thing that makes for the best serial books, it wraps up the events in this book while opening the door for the next adventure. So, you are left ready and waiting for the next book without feeling the huge drop of a cliffhanger.
Ready or not, ‘The Hawthorne Legacy’ here I come.
Avery solved one mystery and stumbled upon another one. None of the Hawthorne family is surprised, the old man did love his games. But this time will Avery get answers about how she caught the interest of Tobias T. Hawthorne? Let’s find out!
Read if you like: YA, mysteries, ‘Cinderella’ stories, puzzles, thrillers, slow burn, love triangle, lots of fun characters, billionaire hijinks, mysterious rich boys, and a girl who’s streetwise and heart-strong.
After helping the Hawthorne brothers solve a puzzle that forced them to work together Avery begins to realize that the games have only just begun. And this time, she has a head start because she just might know the man they have to find. As they look for clues Avery and the boys begin to unearth a lot of family history. How will they track down this mystery man? Can they find the trail that the old man left so long ago? And what will Avery do when she realizes that two very different brothers hold a part of her heart?
Now that Avery trusts the Hawthorne boys to help and not harm her, we have very different dynamic in the second installment of this series. It’s still a caper full of mystery, danger, and clues but now we have a more cohesive cast and are able to broaden the scope of the Hawthorne family and inheritance. We get to see how the characters’ dynamics shift and grow as their trust builds. Of course, there is still some brotherly competition and plenty of hilarious moments. We didn’t grow that much. But we unearth so many secrets that lead to more secrets and it’s plain to see that no Hawthorne takes the easy road. We’re left wondering what puzzle will demand to be solved before Avery can complete the terms of the will and receive the full rights to the fortune.
