Before the Devil Breaks You

by Libba Bray

The Diviners are together (YAY!) and now they’re up against an evil looming in the darkness lead by the mysterious King of Crows. Can our motley crew learn to wield their power and work together? Let’s find out!

Read if you like: YA mystery/thriller, ghosts/paranormal, historical fiction, multiple POV, found family, love triangle, big character development, highly detailed and lush storytelling, a diverse cast of characters.

After saving their city from a sleeping sickness our Diviners finally realize they need to team up and train because the whole country is about to be in big trouble. Can this group of friends overcome their own fears and shed light on their secrets or will the looming darkness pull their tenuous bonds apart? As they all work their own leads, they uncover a lot of history about Diviner origins and their own pasts. But the King of Crows is watching our Diviners and gathering souls who have been lost and forgotten; drawing himself to a great and unknown power.

Whew! This book had a lot going on and I’m so glad it did. We finally have all the Diviners together and I’ve never been so happy about a team up. Along with uncovering a lot of history about Diviners and what the government was up to, we gain more of the bigger picture with the King of Crows, we also get so much backstory, we get romance, we get absolutely beautiful character arcs for EVERYONE. And, as usual, we get a light shone onto some of the worst bits of US history with the hopes of understanding and healing.

This is my favorite book of the series so far. I know it’s because of the team up and all the glorious background info. I know what I like. I don’t like not knowing things, and this was a long time coming for me. I adore these books. I cannot read them quickly. It’s so information dense and I don’t want to miss a speck of story. So, I read and read and read and read… just to keep knowing that we don’t know. Gah! But now we do. And I’m a happy lady.

Now I must mentally prepare for the next book. ‘Cause no matter the ending, its gonna get a whole lot worse before it gets better. The King of Crows is coming
