Review: Well Matched

by Jen DeLuca

The Well Met Series continues with the third book – Well Matched. And let me tell you, I’ve never been more excited to read about kilts in my life. Will this unlikely pair fizzle or flame when plans meet reality? Let’s find out.

Read if you like: cute and fun romance, fake dating, forced proximity, friends to lovers, age gap, a lovable hunk who’s more than a pretty face, an *ahem* ‘experienced’ leading lady who overcomes her own anxiety.

April Parker moved to a small town fifteen years ago to give her young daughter, Caitlin, a better life after divorce left her reeling. To avoid questions and assumptions April avoided any sort of social life in Willow Creek. Besides she has a plan, as soon Caitlin graduates, she’s moving back to her life in the city where it’s easier to blend in. That started getting tricky three years ago after her sister’s extended visit ended with moving vans and wedding plans. And now April finds herself smack in a group of friends and not only one but two book clubs. But she was ready to dash it all and pack up until her friendship with Mitch Malone, gym teacher, coach extraordinaire, and Renaissance Faire Scotsman, makes her feel things she hasn’t felt in almost twenty years. And he really throws a wrench paintbrush in the works when he asks for her help during the Malone family reunion; promising to pay her back with his home renovation knowhow.

Mitch is the guy that everyone knows and loves, despite the fact that he’s dated most of the women in Willow Creek. Everyone is ready for the show as he puts on his kilt for the annual Ren Faire. But with Mitch there’s a lot more than meets the eye candy and it seems like he’s less interested in perusing for dates these days. When the big family dinner shapes into an extended weekend reunion, he’s going to need some female backup to keep the questions over his relationship status at bay. But with the chemistry flowing their fake connection begins to seem all too real. Can these commitment-phobes handle the pressure?

April and Mitch! APRIL AND MITCH!!!!! I’ve shipped these two since the first time she met him and called him ‘kilty.’ The snark is strong with this couple, and its delicious. I love friends to lovers. I love a well-done fake dating trope. And it is well done. Small towns and fake dating provide a lot of fun moments. I even love the age gap, which sometimes doesn’t work for me, but I’m all in with this momma cougar. It’s funny. It’s spicy (considerably more than the last two books, still 3 peppers). It’s got character development for days. It’s even got fun and cute home renovation situations which add a level of domesticity that is absolutely endearing. I love them. The framework and pacing of this book are faster than the previous installments and allow for more development on all sides of their relationship. Bonus, the gang’s all together at the Ren Faire. So, while April and Mitch might not be my favorite Well Met Series couple (I have a thing for nerd boys… and pirates). April and Mitch are Well Matched and their story might be my favorite yet.

I’m excited to see how the next duo will match up in Well Traveled, expected September 2022.
